Learn to Value, Values

Within a company or organization, values are either cherished by the wisdom that they provide or brushed off because they became an art piece on a wall somewhere. But if used correctly, values can be used as waypoints on a map. They can show where to go and stay on the path if for any reason the organization get s off course.

I have seen companies bring groups in for team development and the team seems lost. I have seen others come because they want to be tested by their values.

You know the difference because the employees can either recite the values of the company by heart or they have no clue what they are. It is the later of the two when you know that there is tension and or dysfunction within that work place.

I recall two companies very clearly that I worked with in the past that give good examples. The first company could not recall any of the values nor did they know how knowing the values of their company could help their job. The whole day was spent in confusion and trying to realign themselves to be able to communicate with each other and discovered values they all agreed on that were not on the original list from the leader.

The second company when asked their values where able to go down the line listing all 14 values. During the day they seemed to work in sync and avoided the common miscommunications that the activities tried to convey.

Establishing Values for any company is a great tool to help your company and your leadership get from where they are to where they want to be. Below are common reasons why using values are good for your business.

  1. They act as a sounding board for wisdom – If you are familiar with sonar; you know that it uses sound to bounce off an object to display what you can’t see. This is good for avoiding objects in the water. Values work the same way. As your business grows, there are things that lie ahead that we cannot see. By setting values, if the picture does not match to what you know to be safe then you know to avoid it.
  2. Values act as waypoints on a map – Way points are programmed spots on a GPS that you know to either avoid or set a course towards. Values help us set waypoints, to show us and anyone new to an organization, where to go and what to avoid if they never experienced it before.
  3. Values help establish a firm foundation – Any good business will grow but a great business will root itself in the values that create to drive their business for lasting results. I remember a story in the bible that talks about building on sand verses rock. When a storm comes, anything built on sand will wash away and be forgotten. Anything built on rock will last through the storms and last for a lifetime. You know storms will come.

Wouldn’t it be nice to establish yourself on something strong that carries you through? If so, at the next meeting ask everyone at the table to write down the company values. Does everyone know them? Does everyone understand why? Don’t move on if you hear a yes, make sure they tell you why. Then you know you are on the same page or not.
