Our Values, Your Experience

Whether it is team building or training in the DISC personality, it is not uncommon for the values of a company to bubble to the surface. Usually I will ask for a team or group to write out what the ideal day would look like for the training. This sets guidelines when working with a team. Boundaries if you will. These boundaries help the group stay accountable and for them to measure success when they stay within that list.

Every company has a set of values that communicate who they are even if it is written down or not. These values drive the culture of a company and show everyone inside and outside the doors what is important for them and how an organization functions. Because of this truth and how they work, I thought it important to list mine my values publicly, displaying them to keep me accountable and to stay on track.

Here are the Values that keep us on the right path when working in a program:

Anytime I am working with a client there are four things that is a must so that I know I am on the right path to deliver the best program possible.

  1. Fun – As a friend of mine used to say, “If you didn’t come here to have fun, then to bad.” Fun is what breaks down barriers and allows everyone to approach the day with open minds and not be conformed to past experiences.
  2. Safe – Over the past 21 years of doing team building, everyone always recalls that moment when someone falls off a table and is caught by the team. There is a time and place for it but not in what I do. The activities I prepare allow participants to interact with everyone in a physically, emotionally and mentally safe environment. Falling off tables is not emotionally safe especially when there is mistrust in a team. Also, there are those with physical issues that prevent them to doing so, which leads me to number 3.
  3. 100% Participation – If everyone is going to grow and experience a fun learning day, then everyone needs to be able to participate. The activities that I implement in a program are conducive to all. Just as the DISC personality test shows how we are wired differently, it also means that everyone plays differently as well. The team development programs that I put into practice allows for everyone to participate.
  4. Ask don’t tell – While doing activities, members of your group will connect or see parallels in what they are experiencing with what they do at work. It is then that I will ask, “What, So What and Now What?” This is the basis to discovery but I do ask additional questions that are customized to a group for greater impact and ownership on the breakthroughs they have made about their team.

These are the four boundaries that I use to deliver a program and drive my work to success. So much so I have placed brackets around the company name to keep me accountable for what I need to do to deliver a great program.
