6 Ways To Learn From Conferences

Summer and fall is usually when conferences are held. In developing you, it would be nice to know how to get the most out of the conferences you attend. At least you should be attending conferences but that’s another blog for another day.

Here is how to benefit from going to a conference by following 6 simple practices.

  1. Be Sincere – Sincerity works from both sides. The speaker and you. Even though you pay money to be there, doesn’t mean that you are fully there. Approach the conference with your whole heart leaving everything behind. This is a time to renew yourself, to refill your cup after pouring wisdom into other people.
  2. Be inspired – Inspiration comes from hearing new ideas. We all need good ideas. Ideas can be life changing. I love what Jim Rohn says, ”One more idea can open the lock on the door of prosperity.”
  3. Be Thankful – Thanksgiving opens all doors. You have a chance to be around like minded people that are willing to share time, thoughts and secrets towards the subject that brought you there in the first place. Cynicism and distrust can lock the very door of success you are trying to open. There might be a time when work sends you somewhere to learn more about something but cynicism kicks in and you are shut out from great material.
  4. Listen well – Make sure you focus. Pull your attention away from the outside world. Concentrate on the now and what could be learned. Part of staying focused is to shut off all electronics. Let voicemail pick up or have your automatic reply set to say, “Gone Learning.”
  5. Take good notes – Taking notes captures stories and reminds us of the value of what we learn. Notes are seeds that grow and allow us to share value to others. I have to admit as I looked around the conference only an eight of us were taking notes. I’m afraid they didn’t get out with much information.

Don’t be a follower, be a student – In other words, take advice and not orders. Just make sure that what you determine and what conclusions you draw from, is the product of your decision and not the speaker. There are times when a speaker sneaks in some thoughts that do not line up to your values.
