Doubles – A Dice Icebreaker

Description: This is everyone playing against everyone else. The first one to score 100 is the winner but only if the dice are nice. When a participant rolls the dice and gets a double, then you write down as many numbers as you can before someone gets a double.

Educational Purpose: The purpose of this is to bring fun. Compete in a friendly way that brings energy, entertainment, and laughter. This fun helps to break down the walls of negative behavior and opens up everyone to things to come.

Needs:

  • A pair of dice for each table or circle; any size or color can be used.
  • One pen per table.
  • A sheet of paper for each participant (a three-by-five index card will do).
  • Preferably a table(s) that everyone can fit around comfortably. No more than eight participants around a table.

Optimal Group Size: Five to thirty people.

Time: Five to ten minutes.

Instructions:

  1. All players gather around the table (or sit in a circle on the floor). The pen is placed in the center of the playing area. Paper is handed out to each participant. I recommend no more than eight people around a table.
  2. The dice are passed around the circle and rolled once by each person, in each round. A round is considered once around the table.
  3. Once someone rolls doubles (e.g., two fives), the frenzy begins when the whole group yells, “Doubles.” The person who rolled the doubles takes the pen and paper and begins to write out numbers in consecutive order from 1 to 100. That’s it.
  4. The dice continue around the table (skipping the person writing) until someone else rolls doubles. Once the second person rolls doubles and the group yells, “Doubles,” then that person takes the pen away from the previous player/writer and begins writing their numbers.
  5. Play continues at a very fast pace until someone makes it to 100. The lucky person who writes 100 is the winner.
  6. Sometimes you may write 20 to 30 numbers in a row; sometimes you might get only a few, but you may start where you left off from the last number written on your paper.
  7. You may not attempt to keep the next person from taking the pen from you or damaging it in any way. (Let’s face it some people are just too competitive.)
  8. Each game lasts about four to five minutes.

Safety: No safety concerns, unless you play the variation below and are careful of the surroundings for the group not to trip.

Facilitation Tips: It will be helpful if during the explanation of the game that you can try to get them to yell, “Doubles!” with you as you explain it. Let them know that it is a key phrase that allows the writer to release the pen. Plus, it is just fun to yell.

Observations/Questions: Since this is a fun exercise to get participants to relax and laugh, no questions need to be asked. This is, however, a good lead into setting the tone for the day, that you do expect it to be a fun day and not to be boring with lectures.

Variations:

  • For youth, this could be played like Alaskan Baseball. Have each circle be a team and the first team to reach 50 is the winner. But with every double, instead of writing, a different member of the team runs as fast as he or she can around the group, as many times as possible. Each revolution is equal to one. When another group gets a double, you have to stop. Big foam dice work great here too.
